DANIEL DZIDZONU

Togolese trumpet player & band leader Daniel Dzidzonu wants to bring the authenticity back to African music. His music is a smooth blend of traditional afrobeat, jazz, modern vocals and killer brass sounds. Hailing from Togo and now residing in Belgium, Daniel’s accomplished trumpet playing was honed from a young age listening to his father’s brass band which performed at church services and weddings. Now as a masterful composer of modern afrobeat and highlife tunes Unknownland”, “E.I.A(Emergency in Africa)…and the last one “Remember Masekela.
These sounds will give you plenty of familiar reference points, yet has a soulful groove.

Daniel Dzidzonu was born in Lomé, the Togolese capital, in 1985. Raised in West-African music, he became the bandleader in his father’s band at 16, when he started composing his own music, drawing inspiration from blues, gospel and African traditional music. After coming over to Belgium in 2009, he started a general course of jazz at the Music Academy of Evere (Brussels), followed by the courses ‘jazz horns’ and ‘instrumental jazz ensemble’. In the meantime, he learned the tricks of afrobeat by playing with Fela Kuti’s legendary guitar player Oghene Kologbo for ten years and occasionally with master afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. In parallel he has launched his own afrobeat project.
